Home / Is Your Golf Swing Lost in Space?
 |
By Rick Bradshaw
To strike the ball consistently, your club head must travel on a constant arc that will eventually align into the golf ball at the bottom of your swing. One of the major problems I see with many golfers is that their club head does not remain in a constant orbit. Their club head invariably is lifted our of arc or orbit on the back swing an then tries to re-enter the original orbit on the down swing to contact the ball. More times than not, the club head remains lost in space and never makes it back to its original path, resulting in topped, fat and missed shots. A simple thought will correct this action, but you must be strong willed to perform this tour professional's technique. You must feel a firm straightness in your left arm and elbow at address and maintain this feel into your back swing. Your body has to pivot or turn into the resistance of both your feet and legs for full benefit. Starting out, try to feel in your back swing that you left arm and club head are in a straight line and are waist high. Once this feeling is achieved think about unwinding your left hip to pull the left arm and golf club back into the ball.
The swing will feel shorter than it really is, but the weight of the club head will hinge your wrist naturally at the top of the back swing. This firm one-piece compact feeling in the left side will lead to great things. It is the same technique that allows me to drive the ball over 300 yards with just my left arm and hand. It is also the same technique that made my partner, Jim Dent, a perennial long drive king on the PGA Tour for over 30 years and it is absolutely the same technique used by Tiger Woods, swing after swing, to maintain a wide constant swing arc with maximum club head velocity.
Don't let your club head get lost in space and learn how to control your left side throughout your golf swing......and you will improve!
